Week 36: 23-29.04.2018

Good daily mileages this week, in spite of sailing with crooked sail in the point of sail, small “beard” on the boat and opposite oceanic current. But nothing is for free…

Week 36: 23-29.04.2018

In plus: couple dozen of fishing rope with glass balls in beautiful, knotted “baskets”. In minus though: 3 packs of instant rolled oats, 3×400 grams of rotten stuff went into the water. Of course just the oats, without packages. I am in plus in kilos, which is a minus after all ?.

I changed the gas stove. A bit late for that. Only after the change I noticed how badly the old one worked. Huge gas consumption, weak flame. Unfortunately, the stoves on Puffin have a hard time, because they stand very close to the ventilation aperture, through which they get splashed often, sometimes with drops of very salty water. Corrosion is inevitable. That would be it for summary. To tell the truth, it is impossible to write. Puffin has reminded herself about the origin of her name – she tries to set off and fly. Sometimes it seems like the flight is a couple of metres long. And then comes such a hit, that you have to be careful what you are doing with your spoon, because you can knock out your teeth or spoon your tonsils out. The shock is shocking. The hit is stunning. It feels as if all the glasses are breaking, even though I don’t have any. It is not only uncomfortable anymore, it is just hyper-stressful. The remedy is simple. Reduce the sails, slow down, so that the boat, instead of jumping from a wave, starts to simply slide down its slope. Had the weather been more stable, the waves would also have been more flat and less steep. Yet, the unbelievable squall around the clock makes the sea very rough. It is not only a ride on a well-ploughed field, but also a full-blown rodeo with bull-riding.

On the mileage:

27146 miles with an average of 4.5 kts. – 107,5 miles a day

25146 done, AVS 4.2kts. – 99.5 miles per day

1700 miles to the finish line after sailing through 93,7% of the planned route

ETA vs DEADLINE 1 days and 21 hours behind the schedule.
